REVIVE EXISTS TO PREACH THE GOSPEL, MAKE DISCIPLES AND BUILD THE CHURCH.
Just North of Cardiff there’s this massive expanse of land known as the South Wales Valleys. A hundred years ago this area was the industrial hub of Great Britain, with millions of tons of coal being exported from Welsh coalmines each year. Churches were filled with worshippers and communities were thriving. To cut a long story short, the mines all closed. Thousands were left unemployed, and this once thriving area became almost unrecognisable.
Today, hundreds of thousands of people still live in these Valley towns. However, these places are no longer defined by booming industry and bustling communities. Rather, they make headlines for their huge unemployment and crime levels; massive drug and alcohol abuse rates; heartbreaking suicide rates; overwhelming numbers of people being treated for depression; staggering rates of obesity; some of the highest rates of teenage pregnancies in Europe; and shocking levels of poverty.
And it’s all on our doorstep.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all doom and gloom. The people are amazing and the scenery breathtaking. But, the South Wales Valleys are incredibly needy places. A couple of years ago the Evangelical Movement in Wales predicted that within 20 years, 90% of churches in Wales will have shut their doors for good. If you drive through any town in the Valleys you’ll see church buildings left, right and centre. Most of them have become flats, offices or clubs. There’s so many shocking statistics about the Valleys when it comes to economic, social and health issues, however there’s a massive spiritual need too. The people in these areas are crying out for the life changing Good News of Jesus Christ, but gradually the churches are dying out. Who will tell them? This is where the idea for Revive was birthed.
For thirteen years, Revive has been working with small but brilliant churches in and around the Valleys. We help run Gospel-focused kids clubs and youth clubs, with the intention of getting young people off the streets and into church. We tell them about Jesus, help them with issues they’re struggling with, offer them good role-models, and a whole load of fun. It’s our heart to see these young people come to faith and integrated into their local church communities. We’ve seen some incredible, mind-blowing things happen over the years, with God constantly exceeding all our expectations. In 2009 we currently work in 21 different areas, trying to reach hundreds of young people each week with the Gospel. We believe it has the power to transform lives, families and communities. Even the darkest of places. From September 2009 onwards we’re launching THREE new ministries. Firstly, we’re starting a team that will be running Mums & Toddlers clubs in churches around the Valleys. Secondly, we’re starting a team that will be running services in elderly homes and hospices in various Valleys towns. Finally, we’re looking at starting a schools team who will be going into Comprehensive Schools running assemblies, RE lessons and Christian Unions. Our vision has expanded now to bring the Gospel to all ages, and to see the Body of Christ in South Wales revived once again, with people of all ages worshipping alongside one-another.
To put it in a nutshell…
Revive exists to build the Church, win the lost and make disciples. It does this through passionate gospel preaching, sacrificial serving and persevering prayer.
